"I am so burnt out" now covers everything from a hard fortnight to genuine collapse. That looseness has a cost: when the real thing arrives, it gets treated as a scheduling problem.
The three components
Burnout is usually described as having three parts, and it is the combination that distinguishes it from tiredness:
| Component | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Exhaustion | Depleted before the day starts; rest does not restore you |
| Cynicism / distance | Detachment from work you used to care about; irritation with people you liked |
| Reduced efficacy | A sense that nothing you do makes a difference, regardless of evidence |
Exhaustion alone is tiredness. Exhaustion plus the other two, sustained for months, is a different state.
The clearest test
Does rest work?
After two good nights and a free weekend, tiredness lifts noticeably. If you return on Monday feeling exactly as you did on Friday — for weeks — that is the signal worth taking seriously.
What causes it is usually structural
Research on burnout consistently points at working conditions rather than personal resilience: excessive workload, little control over how work is done, insufficient reward or recognition, unfairness, and a mismatch between personal values and what the job requires.
This matters because it changes what a solution looks like. Meditation does not resolve an impossible workload, and no amount of sleep hygiene fixes having no say over your own week. Individual strategies help you cope; only changes to the conditions resolve it.
What actually helps
- Change something structural, however small. One recurring meeting removed, one boundary on hours, one task handed over. Control is the ingredient that moves the needle.
- Protect sleep first among the personal factors. It will not cure burnout, but nothing else works while you are running on six hours.
- Reconnect with people. Withdrawal is both a symptom and an accelerant.
- Move, gently. Regular activity has consistent effects on mood and is one of the few things that helps while the situation is still unresolved.
- Talk to someone. A doctor, a therapist, or occupational health. Burnout overlaps heavily with depression, and the treatments differ.
Kiva's note
If you have been telling yourself "after this project it will get better" for more than two projects in a row, that sentence is the symptom.
When to get help now
Speak to a doctor promptly if you have persistent low mood or loss of interest for more than two weeks, if you cannot function at work or home, if sleep is severely disrupted, or if you have thoughts of harming yourself. These are treatable, and burnout is not a reason to wait.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between burnout and tiredness?
Tiredness responds to rest — a good night or a weekend makes a noticeable difference. Burnout persists through rest and comes with cynicism about the work and a sense of reduced effectiveness.
Is burnout a medical diagnosis?
It is classified as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition, but its symptoms overlap heavily with depression and anxiety, which are conditions that need proper assessment.
Does a holiday fix burnout?
Usually not for long. Time off relieves the symptoms briefly, but if the workload, control and recognition problems remain unchanged, the state returns within weeks of going back.
